There is something quietly assured about a gentleman who paid attention to the smallest details — and something rarer still about a set that has survived intact.
This Edwardian shirt stud and cufflink set dates to the early years of the 20th century, a time when formal dress was not optional and accessories were commissioned as a complete ensemble. Over the decades, such sets were routinely broken up through loss, replacement, or changing fashion. That this example remains together — matched, hallmarked, and coherent — is increasingly uncommon.
Each piece is crafted in solid 9ct gold and engraved with a beautifully executed feather motif, alive with movement and texture. The engraving catches the light subtly, revealing its depth only as the wearer moves — exactly as it was intended to do under gaslight or chandeliers.
The set comprises a complete five-piece gentleman’s dress set:
A matched pair of oval cufflinks with chain fittings
Three shirt studs, including the larger central stud
All components are fully hallmarked and bear the same maker’s mark, confirming they were produced together as a true set rather than assembled later.
Complete gentleman’s dress sets of this period are now seldom encountered, particularly with all components bearing the same maker’s mark. Most surviving examples have long since been dispersed. This set remains a true whole.
The pieces are housed in a period jewellery case retailed by The Northern Goldsmiths Company of Newcastle upon Tyne. While the case is not original to the set, it is entirely sympathetic in age and character, and presents the pieces as they would have been offered in the early 20th century.
This is not costume jewellery. It is functional Edwardian goldwork — made to be worn, made to last, and made with pride.
Equally suited to:
Formal or evening wear
A collector of gentleman’s accessories
A meaningful heirloom with genuine early-20th-century character
Photographs form part of the description and show condition clearly.
Edwardian-era gentleman’s dress set
Solid 9ct gold throughout
Matching feather-engraved design
Consistent maker’s hallmark across all pieces
Oval cufflinks with period chain fittings
Three shirt studs including larger central stud
Period presentation case (not original to the set)
Very good antique condition throughout.
All pieces retain crisp engraving with excellent definition to the feather motifs, showing only light, age-appropriate surface wear consistent with careful use. No cracks, splits, or repairs observed. The chain fittings on the cufflinks are intact and functional.
Hallmarks remain clear and legible across all components.
The period jewellery case shows honest signs of age and use, including surface wear and scuffing to the exterior, consistent with its early 20th-century origin. The interior presents well and displays the set attractively. As noted, the case is period-appropriate rather than original to the set.
