Antique 18th Century Dutch Delft Blue & White Biblical / Figural Tile
A genuine antique Dutch tin-glazed earthenware tile, dating from approximately the mid-18th century, circa 1740–1770.
The tile is beautifully hand-painted in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed ground and depicts an unusual Biblical or historical figural scene.
The central scene is surrounded by the characteristic double circular border and traditional stylised “ox-head” corner motifs associated with Dutch Delft tiles of this period.
The exact Biblical subject has not been conclusively identified. The scene may possibly relate to Susanna and the Elders or another Old Testament narrative.
Approximate dimensions:
13 x 13 cm Thickness approximately 0.8–1 cm
The reverse retains substantial traces of old mortar/plaster, indicating that the tile was originally installed as an architectural tile.
CONDITION:
Authentic antique condition with considerable age-related wear.
There are chips and losses to the glaze and ceramic body, particularly around the corners and edges.
Surface wear, scratches, staining, minor glaze imperfections and signs of age are present.
Old mortar/plaster remains attached to the reverse.
Despite the edge and corner losses, the main hand-painted central scene remains remarkably well preserved and clearly visible.
No restoration has been carried out by the current owner.
