Vintage Postcard of a plate-sunk sepia impression of a striking image of the Study of a Lion, based on the beautiful oil painting, by Sir Edwin Landseer, displayed in the Tate Gallery, London.
Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) was an English artist and sculptor, with his reputation as an animal painter unrivalled. His 'Study of a Lion' painted in 1862 is a powerful oil painting capturing the raw strength, bulk and intense presence of the male lion. It was created as a model for his famous bronze sculptures at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, commissioned by the government in 1858, with their completion in 1867.
