A fascinating 1789 George Washington inaugural button featuring the celebrated “LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT” design surrounding a central profile bust of Washington. The face displays elaborate hand-engraved period-style decoration and additional script initials or markings around the perimeter, giving this example a particularly distinctive appearance. The button measures approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter and retains the shank on the reverse. It exhibits substantial age-related wear, dark patina, surface oxidation, and a pronounced horizontal split/damage through the center, all clearly visible in the photographs. In our opinion, the overall construction, appearance, and aged surfaces are consistent with an early George Washington inaugural-era pewter button. A visually impressive piece associated with the beginning of the American presidency and George Washington’s 1789 inauguration.
