Pre Revolutionary War NEW YORK Shipping & The Stamp Act 1766 British Newspaper
Offered is an original, collectible newspaper (NOT a copy/reproduction): THE LONDON CHRONICLE, England, March 11, 1766 The back page has a report noting: "...from New York there is advice, that every thing remained quiet there in relation to the Stamp Act, no blockage of shipping having taken place; the people in general have entertained great hopes that the return of the next packet would bring them some agreeable news from England."
Indeed, the Stamp Act would be repealed on March 18.
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, full red tax stamp on page 2, nice condition.
Background: This issue of The London Chronicle from March 11, 1766, captures a tense, quiet moment in colonial American history right before a major turning point of the American Revolution. The notable back-page dispatch from New York reports that local shipping was proceeding without blockade and that colonials were anxiously awaiting the next transatlantic packet ship in hopes of "agreeable news from England" regarding the highly controversial Stamp Act of 1765. This brief report highlights the dramatic 18th-century communication lag: while British readers were consuming this news of peaceful anticipation, Parliament was already debating the act's demise, officially repealing it just seven days later on March 18, 1766—though word of the repeal would not actually cross the Atlantic to relieve and ecstatic New Yorkers until May.
