James Kirke Paulding

James Kirke Paulding autographed handwritten letter signed (ALS), written from Hyde Park, Dutchess County, New York, and dated April 4, 1854. Measuring approximately 6.25 x 3.75 inches, the letter is addressed to Mr. N. B. Moore Jr. of Brooklyn, Long Island, in response to a request for his autograph.

Paulding writes:

"Sir,

In compliance with your request, I herewith transmit you with my autograph.

Respectfully

J. K. Paulding"

Very good condition overall with light age toning, expected folds, and minor handling wear. 

James Kirke Paulding (1778-1860) was an American author, editor, statesman, and the 11th United States Secretary of the Navy, serving under President Martin Van Buren from 1838 to 1841. A close associate of Washington Irving, Paulding was among the first successful native-born American novelists and essayists, contributing significantly to early American literature. As Secretary of the Navy, he oversaw important reforms during a period of modernization and advocated for strengthening the nation's naval forces. His literary and public service careers made him one of the most prominent American intellectuals and government officials of the first half of the nineteenth century.
