ANTIQUE 1816 FRENCH MINIATURE HAND PAINTED WOMAN PORTRAIT

and original miniature representing the portrait of a lady dated 1816

THE PORTRAIT
The sitter is depicted bust-length against a dark background, wearing an elegant white Empire-style dress, 
a delicate red bead necklace and a remarkable ochre-yellow bonnet tied beneath the chin with a silver-grey 
ribbon.Her face is finely and delicately painted, with soft modelling of the complexion, expressive eyes and 
carefully rendered curls framing the forehead.
INSCRIPTION & DATE
The reverse bears an old handwritten inscription which appears to read:
“Seconde étude d’après nature par Gérard – 1816”
(“Second study from life by Gérard – 1816”).

A charming and refined French portrait from the Restoration period, displaying the characteristic fashion 
and elegance of the early 19th century, with strong Neoclassical and late Empire influences.

Please note: The attribution suggested by the old handwritten inscription has not been independently authenticated.

Without the frame : Height 5,6 cm 2.20 in. Width 4,5 cm 1.77 in.
With the frame Height 12,2 cm 4.80 in. Width 10,1 cm 3.98 in.

In great condition. No damage on the portrait. To be noted the glass shows some age-related 
deterioration and small cloudy spots.
