Provenance

Recently acquired through a LiveAuctioneers sale, the painting was cataloged as:

“29” x 35” Antique Oil on Canvas, The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables, in the style of Murillo, 19th century, excellent patina, oil on canvas, gold gilded frame.”

The composition depicts the Virgin Mary standing upon the crescent moon and surrounded by cherubs and heavenly clouds, following Murillo’s iconic Spanish Baroque prototype. The painting possesses attractive age, patina, and decorative presence.

The work appears to bear the signature “R. Salvi” in the lower right corner.

Antique condition with age-related wear.

• Craquelure, surface wear, and varnish discoloration consistent with age.
• Areas of scattered paint loss and abrasion.
• Notable puncture/tear to the canvas on the right side of the composition near the cherub figures, with associated paint loss and lifting around the damaged area. The puncture is clearly visible in the photographs and may require professional conservation depending on the buyer’s intentions.
• Additional minor imperfections and wear present from age and handling.
• Canvas appears stable overall aside from the noted puncture.
• Reverse shows age-related wear and loss of original backing paper.
• Gilded frame displays expected scuffs, nicks, and finish wear.
