This is a hand-carved Haida argillite raven pendant signed F. Yeltatzie, hung on an Italian sterling silver chain — wearable art from Haida Gwaii. Argillite is a soft black shale from a single protected quarry at Slatechuck Mountain near Skidegate, workable only by Haida carvers. The Yeltatzie family of Masset has carved argillite, silver and copper for generations; Raven is the Trickster who coaxed the first Haida people from a clam shell.
