Handsome early view of the original Colonial/Greek Revival building for Girard College, founded in 1833 and opened in 1848 as outlined by the will of Stephen Girard. It was considered the largest single charitable donation every in the United States at the time and was used to open and operate this boarding school for the poor, orphaned or fatherless “boys” in Philadelphia. The first “girl” was not admitted until 1984.

William T. Purviance was active in Pennsylvania from the 1860s through the 1880s. Was engaged by several railroads to document the eastern lines. He made extensive views of the Pennsylvania landscape.
