MAGNIFICENT FETISH (40 cm) FROM THE KONGO/YOMBE OF FORMER ZAIRE, 1960/70
Minkisi fetishes (plural for Nkisi) are among the most fascinating pieces of tribal art. For the Kongo, they are truly the incarnation of a spiritual entity subject to human control through rites and are used to resolve all sorts of problems (illness, sterility, conflicts, etc.).
The Minkisi were also the custodians of the clan's collective memory and could occasionally serve to avenge the innocent by inflicting sudden illness or killing the perjurer.
When it comes to personal or family fetishes, these are generally anthropomorphic statues, 15 to 30 cm high, with a ventral cavity in which the magical charge is placed: the "Bilongo."
This is composed of various plant and animal substances placed in the cavity, closed by a resinous cork decorated with shells or a mirror.
The mirror allowed the diviner to detect the approach of sorcerers coming from each of the four directions.
The act of closing this receptacle is not trivial, as it indicates that the invoked powers can be controlled.
It is the diviner, the Nganga, who places the charge during a ceremony and thereby activates the statue's powers through multiple touches.
The face was treated with care because it was intended to convey the expression or personality of the spirit possessing it. In the case of the statuette I'm putting up for sale tonight, the grimacing mouth (perhaps to indicate bouts of fever) and the double face, as well as the dual coloring, clearly serve a very specific mediumistic function.
Depending on the region and the statue's attributions, the Nkisi (most often anthropomorphic) had different physical postures.
Those clutching a weapon in their raised right arm were the most dynamic and effective.
Those with an open mouth received food offerings while being asked to "eat" the unknown criminal against whom they were activated.

Minkisi-Fetische (Plural von Nkisi) gehören zu den faszinierendsten Stücken der Stammeskunst. Für die Kongo sind sie tatsächlich die Verkörperung einer spirituellen Einheit, die sich durch Riten der menschlichen Kontrolle unterwirft und zur Lösung aller Arten von Problemen (Krankheit, Unfruchtbarkeit, Konflikte usw.) eingesetzt wird.
Die Minkisi waren auch die Hüter des kollektiven Gedächtnisses des Clans und konnten gelegentlich auch dazu dienen, Unschuldige zu rächen, indem sie den Meineidigen mit einer plötzlichen Krankheit quälten oder ihn töteten.
Dabei handelt es sich im Allgemeinen, wenn es sich um persönliche oder familiäre Fetische handelt, um anthropomorphe Statuen von 15 bis 30 cm Höhe mit einer Bauchhöhle, in der die magische Ladung platziert ist: der „Bilongo“.
Dieser besteht aus verschiedenen pflanzlichen und tierischen Substanzen, die in einen Hohlraum eingebracht werden, der durch einen mit Muscheln oder Spiegeln verzierten Harzstopfen verschlossen ist.
Der Spiegel ermöglichte es dem Wahrsager, die Annäherung von Zauberern aus allen vier Himmelsrichtungen zu erkennen.
Das Verschließen dieses Gefäßes ist nicht trivial, denn es zeigt an, dass die angerufenen Kräfte beherrscht werden können.
Es ist der Wahrsager, der Nganga, der während einer Zeremonie die Ladung platziert und so mit Hilfe mehrerer Berührungen die Kräfte der Statue aktiviert.
Das Gesicht wurde mit Sorgfalt behandelt, da es den Ausdruck oder die Persönlichkeit des Geistes wiedergeben musste, der davon Besitz ergriff. Bei der Statuette, die ich heute Abend zum Verkauf anbiete, haben der grimassierende Mund (vielleicht um Fieberschübe anzudeuten) und das doppelte Gesicht sowie die doppelte Farbgebung offensichtlich eine ganz bestimmte mediale Funktion.
Je nach Region und Zuschreibung der Statue hatten die (meist anthropomorphen) Nkisi unterschiedliche körperliche Haltungen.
Diejenigen, die eine Waffe mit erhobenem rechten Arm hielten, waren am dynamischsten und effektivsten.
Denjenigen mit offenem Mund wurden Essensangebote gemacht und sie wurden aufgefordert, den unbekannten Verbrecher zu „essen“, gegen den der Mund aktiviert wurde.

I feticci Minkisi (plurale di Nkisi) sono tra le opere d'arte tribali più affascinanti. Per i Kongo, sono infatti l'incarnazione di un'entità spirituale che si sottomette al controllo umano attraverso riti e viene utilizzata per risolvere ogni genere di problema (malattie, sterilità, conflitti, ecc.).
I Minkisi erano anche i depositari della memoria collettiva del clan e potevano occasionalmente vendicare gli innocenti infliggendo un'improvvisa malattia allo spergiuro o uccidendolo.
Si tratta generalmente, quando si tratta di feticci personali o familiari, di statuette antropomorfe alte dai 15 ai 30 cm, dotate di una cavità ventrale in cui è collocata la carica magica: il "Bilongo".
Questo è composto da varie sostanze vegetali e animali poste nella cavità chiusa da un tappo resinoso decorato con conchiglie o specchietti.
Lo specchio consentiva all'indovino di individuare l'avvicinarsi degli stregoni da ciascuna delle quattro direzioni.
L'atto di chiudere questo ricettacolo non è banale perché indica che i poteri invocati possono essere dominati.
È l'indovino, il Nganga, che durante una cerimonia posiziona la carica e attiva così i poteri della statua attraverso molteplici tocchi.
Il volto veniva trattato con cura perché doveva essere in grado di tradurre l'espressione o la personalità dello spirito che ne prendeva possesso. Nel caso della statuetta che metto in vendita questa sera, la bocca con una smorfia (forse per indicare attacchi di febbre) e la doppia faccia, così come la doppia colorazione, hanno chiaramente una funzione medianica ben precisa.
A seconda della regione e delle attribuzioni della statua, gli Nkisi (il più delle volte antropomorfi) avevano atteggiamenti fisici diversi.
Coloro che impugnavano l'arma con il braccio destro alzato erano i più dinamici, i più efficaci.
A coloro che avevano la bocca aperta venivano offerte del cibo mentre veniva chiesto loro di "mangiare" il criminale sconosciuto contro cui era stato attivato il potere.
