HMV Model 97C Portable Wind-Up Gramophone – c.1938–40 – Original Green Case – 78rpm

A genuine pre-war His Master’s Voice (HMV) Model 97C portable gramophone, finished in its attractive original green rexine-covered case and retaining its original HMV soundbox, chrome fittings and identification plate. The Model 97C was one of HMV’s late portable wind-up gramophones produced during the late 1930s and around the beginning of the wartime period.

The gramophone is fitted with the correct acoustic soundbox and is designed for playing 78rpm shellac records. The interior presents very well, with clean chromework, original tonearm, turntable and HMV branding. The serial plate is present and reads:

Condition

* Original green carrying case with age-related wear consistent with use.

* Original HMV soundbox and tonearm.

* Internal horn and fittings appear complete.

* Identification plate intact.

* Please study photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

Operation

The gramophone winds, runs and plays but it has only been tested for 2 minutes and I’m not an expert on gramophones.

As with all vintage mechanical machines, a future service should be carried out (immediately) to improve performance depending on the buyer’s expectations.

The cosmetic condition is actually stunning.

This machine is intended for 78rpm shellac records only and should not be used with modern LPs or vinyl singles.

A lovely and increasingly collectible example of a genuine pre-war HMV portable gramophone, ideal for collectors, display, period interiors, or enjoyment with a collection of 78rpm records.

I have maybe 20-30 gramophone records I am ADDING TO THIS LOT.

PLEASE only purchase if you plan on servicing the speed changer. That is the only issue. The end knob on the winder is missing. Simply attach a new one if you need it. It is not required for winding.
