Background: This June 5, 1813 issue of The Weekly Register serves as an extraordinary primary source documenting a pivotal turning point in the War of 1812, capturing crucial military operations across the Northern frontier and Southern territory. Its six pages of "Events Of The War" report on the strategic American "Capture of York [Toronto]"—a tactical victory that boosted U.S. morale despite the tragic death of hero Gen. Z. M. Pike, who was killed in action leading the assault—and detail the crucial "Defeat of the Enemy" at the "Attack Upon Sackett's Harbor," where American forces successfully defended their primary Lake Ontario naval base from a British invasion. Additionally, the issue documents early American expansionism through a "Proclamation" signed by James Wilkinson following the U.S. occupation and annexation of "Mobile" from Spanish West Florida, while providing frontline accounts of the economic warfare unfolding during the Royal Navy's "Blockade of the Chesapeake" and the capture of "American Prizes."
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period." |

Historical reports may be beautiful or ugly, but they are always informative. While we rejoice in the beautiful (heroic, discovery, amazing feats, etc.), we at History's Newsstand also offer "the ugly" for we are determined to learn from the wrongs of the past - understanding, to do so, we must be willing to look these wrongs directly in the face and shout "NO MORE!". It is for this reason many Black Americans collect historic slave ads, Jews collect reports regarding the Holocaust, women collect coverage of the Women's Suffrage Movement, etc.. If you find any to be offensive, we agree! Hopefully this is an indication we are moving in the right direction. |
