Author-inscribed and signed August 21, 1965 to John and Nancy Stewart. John G. Stewart was Hubert Humphrey’s senior legislative aide, participated in the Senate effort to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and later served as executive assistant to Vice President Humphrey. This early presentation copy has significant American political and civil-rights provenance. Hardcover measures approximately 9.5" x 6.25" with 317 numbered pages. Includes original dust jacket and unused Simon and Schuster reader-response card.

Binding is intact and pages remain securely attached. The author’s large signed and dated inscription appears on the front free endpaper. Black cloth boards have shelf wear including a bump on the lower right front corner. Dust jacket has some wear including staining along the interior upper edge.
