A charming and decorative Murano art glass handbag vase, hand blown in the classic Italian tradition in a vibrant red and white latticino swirl pattern. A delightful example of the playful, whimsical figural forms for which Murano glassmakers became internationally celebrated in the mid-20th century.

The body is formed in the shape of a lady's handbag — a favorite novelty form among Murano artisans — with swirling red and white glass threads pulled through the body in the latticino technique, creating a lively, energetic pattern. The applied clear glass handles are ribbed and twisted, attached to the body with decorative applied flower rosettes — each individually shaped by the glassblower's tools while the glass was still molten. The overall form is rounded and generous, sitting comfortably on a flat base.

The piece is unsigned — typical of much Murano production, where individual artisans rarely signed their work and pieces were identified by paper labels which have since been lost. The quality of the latticino work and the applied rosette handle attachments are consistent with mid-20th century Murano production.

About Murano Glass

Murano glass has been produced on the island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon since the 13th century. The latticino technique — pulling threads of colored glass through clear glass to create swirling patterns — is one of the most celebrated Murano traditions, perfected over centuries. Novelty figural forms such as handbags, animals, and shoes became particularly popular in the mid-20th century and remain among the most collected categories of Murano art glass worldwide.
