This Japanese hina ningyo statuette appears to date to the 1930s (see below for explanation), and comes in its original wooden case. It depicts a kago, or palanquin, that in ancient times was used to transport aristocrats and royalty. It's made mostly of lacquered wood.

Its age is based on a small bit of background that we know about this piece: KTD's family received it in the early 1970s, given to them by a woman in her 40s whose family used it when she herself was a little girl. Although we can't be exact, it dating to the 1930s seems like a fair guess.

There is general wear and dustiness, with some damage to the lacquer on the rack beside the palanquin, but there is no significant damage to the palanquin itself. The front lid on the case has broken and been repaired, and so does not slide as smoothly as it should (but it does slide).

For scale, the base is about L11 7/8" (302mm).
