Rare reference to the Greenback Party which existed from 1874-1889. It was rooted in farmers opposing a return to the gold standard to help costs after the Panic of 1873. They supported the continued printing of non gold backed "greenbacks" which had been used in the Civil War. The party ran three presidential candidates and had a number of Congressmen. It merged with labor interests in the Greenback Labor Party in 1878 but saw a slow decline in the 1880s. Its descendent was the Populist Party in the 1890s demanding looser monetary policy and leaving the gold standard. Millport is a small village in Chemung County, New York. A rare item from the Gilded Age in America.
