Antique Illa-Mesa Carved Stone Figural Amulet Ceremonial Table with a Cross

  • For your consideration is an impressive carved stone amulet
  • Characteristic for the Aymara and Quechua cultures, alabaster (Huamanga stone) fetishes, as this one were meant for animal increase rites in the Altiplano region of Bolivia and Peru. The so called illa mesa or chacra stone figures, traditionally carved by Callawaya - the Aymara healers were used in spiritual ceremonies for well being and fertility of the herds and safeguard of the agricultural lands ("chacras" in Quechua)
  • These were usually buried in the fields as offering to "Pachamama" - The Mother Earth
  • The presented here carving features a ceremonial table with a cross, a RARE subject
  • Circa 19th century, Peru
  • Measurements: Approximately 2.5" x 2" x 1.5" high

  • Condition: Very Good overall. Please see photos. Minor chipping and encrusted mineral deposits, consisted with age and unearthed provenance. All original.
