Here is an unusual pair of sewing or embroidery scissors featuring an owl. The bird is very finely detailed and his body spreads across both shanks when they are closed. The centre joint is tight so they cut well and the blades are free from rust.

If you collect either antique sewing items or scissors in particular, these scissors will make a wonderful addition to your collection.

Antique sewing scissors featuring specialized birds like owls are highly prized by tool collectors, representing symbolic meanings and specialized regional metalwork. Owl motifs on antique scissors are highly sought after due to their association with wisdom, vigilance, and the night.

While standard "stork" scissors are very common, finding owls typically points to specific 19th and early 20th-century European craftsmanship. These scissors may belong to the German "Kullenberg" Style. A significant portion of highly detailed, collectible owl scissors from the late 19th to early 20th century originated in Germany, particularly makers like Kullenberg or brands distributed by Hoffritz.

On these pairs, the entire body of the owl is typically moulded or engraved directly into the shanks. When the scissors are closed, the two halves come together to form a highly detailed, standing owl, with the blades acting as a perch or hidden beneath the feathers. They are commonly found in fine German carbon steel, silvered brass, or decorated with gold-washed (gilt) handles.

This item was from the private collection of Joan Roberts (1931-2024). A talented needle worker, her collection of needlework tools and related items was a natural extension of her interest in this craft. Acquired over many years, it was particularly strong in stilettos and scissors.
