Rare vintage EVER NEW “Pionner / Pioneer” ice axe with wood shaft.
This is a classic Japanese ice axe made by EVER NEW, marked “Made in Tokyo” and “Special Hand Made.”
The head is stamped “EVER NEW,” “MADE IN TOKYO,” “SPECIAL HAND MADE,” “Pionner,” and “SCM No.3.”
An especially interesting feature is the model name stamp.
The model is generally known as “Pioneer,” while this example is stamped “Pionner,” which appears to be a period misspelling of “Pioneer.”
Rather than a flaw, this unusual spelling gives the piece unique character and additional collector appeal.
According to reference information on vintage EVER NEW ice axes, “Pioneer” is considered one of the early named models used by EVER NEW, appearing alongside No.1 and Special No.1 around the early 1960s.
For collectors of Japanese mountaineering equipment, this may be an interesting piece of history connected to the early development of Japan’s alpine culture.
The head also has an “SCM No.3” marking, indicating chrome-molybdenum steel No.3.
The combination of the model name, unusual spelling variation, SCM No.3 marking, and Tokyo-made stamp makes this a very attractive piece for collectors of Japanese alpine gear.
The long wooden shaft and classic head shape give this ice axe a bold, traditional alpine presence.
