SEE PHOTO(s) - Lot of two (2) COMPLETE ORIGINAL weekly Civil War NEWSPAPERs, the Vermont Watchman & State Journal  (Montpelier, VT) dated Feb 15 and 22, 1861. These 2 original newspapers contain long detailed coverage of President-elect ABRAHAM LINCOLN leaving his home town of Springfield, IL and traveling to Washington, DC by railroad train for his inauguration as President. Lincoln made MANY SPEECHES along the way, which are reported in these newspapers.

On February 11, 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln boarded a train to begin a 1,900-mile, 13-day inaugural journey to Washington, D.C. Faced with secession and assassination threats, he stopped at 16 cities across the North to reassure the nation, ultimately sneaking into D.C. covertly on February 23.

The historic 13-day journey featured a sweeping whistle-stop route across seven states. The primary stops on the "Inaugural Express" included:

  • Feb. 11: Departed Springfield, IL (delivering his famous Farewell Address at the Great Western Depot) and traveled to Indianapolis, IN.
  • Feb. 12-16: Continued through Ohio (Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland) into Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh) and western New York (Buffalo, Albany).
  • Feb. 19-21: Traveled through New York City, Trenton, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA.
  • Feb. 22: Stopped in Harrisburg, PA.

Due to credible intelligence regarding a Baltimore assassination plot, Lincoln departed Harrisburg secretly by overnight train. He bypassed a scheduled appearance in Baltimore, arriving unexpectedly at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., on the morning of February 23.
