There is something deeply reassuring about objects that were never meant to shout.
This pair of antique gentleman’s shirt studs dates to the late Victorian to Edwardian period (circa 1880–1910) and shows all the quiet confidence of formal menswear from a time when understatement was the statement.
The tops are finely hand-engraved and appear gold-fronted, with the reverse constructed in a base metal, a perfectly typical and entirely honest method of manufacture for quality dress studs of the period. These were made to be seen from the front, worn beneath a starched collar, and forgotten about once properly fastened.
The engraving shows gentle, irregular hand work rather than modern repetition, and the wear is soft and consistent with age — not abuse, not fakery. They have clearly lived a life, and survived it.
They are not pristine.
They are not brash.
They are exactly what they should be.
Ideal for:
collectors of antique menswear accessories
period costume or formal dress displays
those who appreciate original, functional survivors rather than polished reproductions
Please study the photographs closely, as they form part of the description and show size, construction, and condition clearly.
