ACTINIC (BLUE LUX – CORAL) T5 HIGH OUTPUT BULBS
These are specially manufactured for coral growth and to make colors pop. But they also provide penetrating light for fresh water plants. And they can be used in horticulture to keep vegetative growth dense and lush.
CORALS:
Actinic radiation, typically centered around 420 nm (ranging from 400–500 nm), is critical for reef aquariums as it promotes coral growth, enhances fluorescence, and simulates the blue light that penetrates deep into ocean waters.
Fluorescence Enhancement: Actinic light is nearly invisible to the human eye but is absorbed by coral chromoproteins, which then re-emit it as bright, visible fluorescent colors (e.g., green, red), making the coral "pop" aesthetically.
Photosynthetic Support: for the growth of zooxanthellae and are essential for deeper-water coral species adapted to low-light environments.
Freshwater Aquariums:
High blue content lighting serves both a functional and an ornamental purpose when plants are part of the aquarium environment. Through the process of photosynthesis, plants increase the oxygen level essential for fish respiration and at the same time reduce the carbon dioxide level, preventing the buildup of carbonic acid which can be harmful to fish. Blue light is able to penetrate water while other colors get absorbed. (That’s why lakes and oceans are blue)
Horticulture:
Plants mainly just use red and blue light for photosynthesis. But the sky is blue and so plants will reach for daylight. Therefore plants grown indoors tend to elongate and get spindly. To get lush, compact grown, with short leaf node spacing, add a few blue actinic bulbs to your grow light set up.
54 Watt Size:
These are F54T5/HO bulbs which are nominally 4’ long. While they are commonly called 48” bulbs, they have a metric length. So they are slightly shorter than 4’. This is how to read a bulb specification:
“F54” = 54 watts
“T5” = Tube diameter of 5/8ths inch
“HO” = High Output
