Moose (Alces alces) The Moose is solitary in summer, but several may gather near streams and lakes to feed on willows and aquatic vegetation such as leaves of water lilies. It can move at a speed of six mph for up to two hours, and can run through the forest quietly at a speed of up to 35 mph. It is a good swimmer and when tormented by mosquitoes and black flies will submerge or roll itself in a wallow to acquire a protective coating of mud.
