1966 Pennsylvania Railroad system timetable (April)

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PARR) was one of the dominant railroad carriers in the US for over a century. Founded in 1837, it served the area between New York and Washington in the east to Chicago and St. Louis in the west, with most of its trackage concentrated in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The PARR competed head-to-head with the New York Central (NYC) in many markets; after World War II, as passenger traffic began to dwindle and operating costs rose, the PARR began having difficult financial times. In a survival move, the PARR and NYC merged to form the Penn Central in 1968; this move was not successful either, and in 1976 the US government took over this line, and other eastern regional railroads, to form Conrail. Conrail was sold to Norfolk Southern and CSX in 1999, and the surviving PARR trackage is now operated primarily by these two railroads.

For auction is a passenger train timetable from the PARR dated April 24, 1966. It contains listings for all trains operated by the PARR, to include between (a) Chicago-Baltimore-Washington-Philadelphia-New York; (b) St Louis-Indianapolis-Dayton-Cincinnati-East Coast cities; (c) Pittsburgh-Baltimore-Washington-Philadelphia-New York; (d) Washington-Baltimore-Philadelphia-Boston-Montreal-Ottawa-Quebec; (e) Washington-New York; (f) Philadelphia-New York; (g) Chicago-Indianapolis-Louisville; (h) Chicago-Richmond-Cincinnati; and (i) Chicago-Dayton-Columbus. It includes equipment manifests for most trains, coach and sleeping car fares, and a map of the PARR system.

This publication measures appx 9x4 inches closed and opens to appx 9x8 inches; it has 16 pages. It is printed on a mid-grade paperstock. This timetable appears to have had little if any use and is in excellent condition. There are no rips, tears, writing, markings, folds or curls, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place.
