Description

Pacific Electric Railway (PER), also known as the Red Car system, was a privately owned mass transit system in Southern California consisting of electrically powered streetcars, light rail cars, and buses. It was the largest electric railway system in the world in the 1920s. Organized around the city centers of Los Angeles and San Bernardino, it connected cities in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The system shared dual-gauge track with the narrow-gauge Los Angeles Railway, or Yellow Car system for part of its route. Created in 1901, the PER gradually ended passenger service in the 1950s.
