A small antique (1910's) art nouveau expanding bookrack by H. L. Judd Manufacturing Company. Perfect for an end table or nightstand.

Commonly known as “Twin Maidens,” this piece is a composite of brass rails and sturdy cast bronze ends, each stamped “9759.”

The art nouveau style was characterized by its evocation of the living form, especially the female form, and often in a state of motion. After World War One, it gradually gave way to art deco, which abandoned the living for in favor of symmetrical and geometric designs more evocative of the machine age.
