The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF), later known simply as the Santa Fe, was one of the railroads of US transpiration lore. Founded in 1859, it stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles, serving the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Competition and the changing climate to create mega-railroads led to the merger of the Santa Fe with the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1983 to form the Santa Fe-Southern Pacific Railroad (SPSF). Not much long after, the Santa Fe-Southern Pacific merged with the Burlington Northern to form the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF), completing the consolidation of three of the nation's most storied carriers.
For auction is a passenger train timetable; it is for the period October 29, 1961 to January 14, 1962 and contains listings for the principal trains operated. It is in an unusual format for timetables, as it lists trains by name and then the departure times from stations served, along with the milepost number and altitude of the station. Trains listed include the Super Chief, the Chief, El Capitan, the San Francisco Chief, the Grand Canyon, the Texas Chief, the Kansas Cityan, the Chicagoan, the Kansas City Chief, the Oil Flyer, and the Tulsan. Local services between such points as Clovis-Carlsbad, Newton-Dodge City, Amarillo-Lubbock, and Williams Junction-Phoenix are also provided. Equipment manifests are the main trains are included, along with fares for coach and Pullman services. There is a nice 2-page centerpage map of the western US, with the Santa Fe route marked and a topographic profile of the main line between Chicago and California.
This brochure measures appx 9x4 inches unopened and contains 32 pages. It is in excellent condition, even though it is now over 50 years old. It has no writing or markings, no spills or smears, no rips or tears.
