Description

You are bidding on an exquisite set of the Works of Shakespeare.
Edited by Charles Knight.

Presenting as a six volume set 'pocket book' size (15.5cm x 10.5cm), published by Routledge, circa 1900-1910, as part of THE NEW UNIVERSAL LIBRARY series. An uncommon, possibly undocumented set, in a more superior fine binding, compared to others in the Routledge Universal library series, which are usually seen published in plain buckram. This leads me to believe this was possibly part of a deluxe set, sold at a higher price point. Each book bound in quarter, blue moire silk, with ivroy spine, adorned with typical Nouveau gilt decoration, extending around the spine area, top edges gilt, red ribbon book marks.

 Condition
The books have survived remarkably well, the bindings in each case beautifully presented with only the lightest of wea and minor marks, beautifully clean, the text block edges are lightly foxed but otherwise clean and well preserved. The bindings are square and tight. Vol 1 having a gift inscription dated 1913 to the front free end paper, Vol 2 is missing its front free end paper. Beyond this the books are clean and well preserved, some occasional paper toning, light areas of foxing, minor handling wear. Some loss to the tips of the ribbon book marks mainly vol 4 & 5. Presenting beautifully throughout.
