Carte de la Floride, de la Louisiane, et Pays Voisins.  Pour server a Historie Generale des Voyages. Echelle de Lieues communes de France. Par M.B. Ing. De la Marine 1757

“Map of Florida, Louisiana, and Neighboring Countries.  To be Used in the General History of Travel.  Scale in common leagues of France.  By M. Bellin Naval Engineer 1757”.

This a 1757 “hand colored” Map of Florida and Louisiana was created by French hydrographer and engineer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. Signed as "M.B. Ingénieur de la Marine" (Marine Engineer), this highly detailed copperplate engraving was originally published for Abbé Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages.

This map spans a massive portion of North America, stretching from the Rio Grande in the west to the Appalachian Mountains in the east, and from the Great Lakes down to the Gulf of Mexico and Florida. A unique feature of Bellin's work is its depiction of early exploration routes and settlements west of New Orleans, as well as the ambiguous "unknown" lands of Northern Texas.

Labeled cities and regions include St. Augustine, New Orleans, Natchez, Santa Fe, Detroit, Mobile, Pensacola, New Mexico, Georgia and the Carolinas.  Topographical features include numerous lakes, rivers and mountains.  The author also labeled a number of native tribes including the Cherokees, Osages, Tensas and Apaches as well as the location of some of the major forts at this time.

Appointed hydrographer of the French Navy at the age of eighteen, Bellin eventually became hydrographer to the King in 1741.  He published numerous sea atlases and charts which would be reprinted in the 19th century, as well as many maps depicting French colonial territories in the New World.  His craftmanship and commitment to accuracy earned him a distinguished reputation as one of the world’s leading cartographers, and many other European mapmakers turned to him for source material.
