This is a choice 4-piece lot of vintage U.S. Kennedy Half Dollars spanning the transition out of circulating precious metal coinage. This collection offers an instant foundation for a silver investor or coin collector.
Lot Breakdown & Composition Details:
- 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar (Philadelphia): First year of issue and the only year struck in 90% fine silver. Contains 0.3617 troy oz of pure silver. The obverse shows very light friction and minimal flattening on the highest design elements, notably the strands of hair directly above Kennedy’s ear and the cheekbone. There is a great deal of the original mint luster remaining across the fields. Some light, scattered contact marks and bag scratches are present, which are expected for a coin that saw brief handling before being saved. Features phenomenal natural rim toning. Reverse: The design elements are very sharp. The horizontal and vertical shield lines, the tail feathers, and the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the ribbon all show strong definition with minimal wear. The golden-brown peripheral rim toning seen on the front carries over beautifully to this side, framing the eagle nicely.
- 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar (Philadelphia): Transitional era struck in 40% silver. Contains 0.1479 troy oz of pure silver. Obverse: the coin retains a very strong strike and excellent remaining mint luster. You can see light golden perimeter toning beginning to form abound the top-left rim near the letters “L-I-B”. There is minimal high-point wear on the hair details above the ear. Reverse: the fields show prominent vertical mint die polishing lines, which are very common for 40% silver business strikes of this era. The individual stars in the central ring, the crispness of the letters in “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the unflattened breast feathers further reinforce AU grade.
- 1968-D Kennedy Half Dollar (Denver): Struck in 40% silver. Contains 0.1479 troy oz of pure silver. Displays a strong "D" mint mark stamp above the date. Obverse: coin retains strong details in the hair strands and sharp lettering around the edges. Light, patchy golden-brown toning along the rim. Reverse: the individual feathers on the eagles’s breast and wings show almost zero visible wear, remaining crisp and well-defined. Original mint luster shines across the central fields, though it begins to dull slightly toward the outer lettering. The same golden-brown toning seen on the front is seen on this side as well.
- 1969 Kennedy Half Dollar (Denver): Struck in 40% silver. Contains 0.1479 troy oz of pure silver. Displays a strong “D” mint mark stamp above the date. Obverse: very light friction is visible on the highest points of Kennedy’s hair profile and cheek bone. The details in the hair strands remain sharp and entirely readable, indicating it barely saw any actual time in public circulation. Golden-brown rim toning present along the upper left rim near the letters “L-I-B-E-R-T-Y”. Reverse: the eagles’s feathers, the arrows in its left talon, and the olive branch leaves in its right talon show remarkably minimal wear. All 50 individual stars wrapping around the central design are clearly defined. This side displays a significantly cleaner surface than the obverse, showing none of the rim toning observed near the letter margins on the obverse. Very light friction marks can be observed under the light across the flat fields of the conBeautiful details on the hair and profile.
