Timer Switches like this are typically used with water heaters. There is no need to run a water heater when you are not awake or not around. You can really lose a lot of energy keeping all of the water in the tank hot overnight. Water heaters have terrible insulation, usually only an inch and a half thick. If they were insulated like a house is (6" thick), you would never be able to get the water heater through doors.
So if you shut a water heater off overnight, you still will have hot water because hot water rises to the top of the tank where it exits. Typical energy calculators show $50/ year energy savings. That's $250 over 5 years.
You can also use this timer to control engine block timers, pool pumps, lighting, or other 240 volt appliances. Now days nearly all LED lights operate automatically on 120 to 277 volts. So it's easy to switch over a whole string of lights to run on 240 volts.
