Heinrich Schalit was an acclaimed Munich-born organist and composer who studied in Vienna under Robert Fuchs (the teacher of Gustav Mahler). After fleeing Nazi Germany, he immigrated to the United States, where he became an influential figure in reforming and elevating American synagogue music.

The cantata is directly built upon pioneer folk songs from pre-state Mandatory Palestine. During the early-to-mid 20th century, Western Jewish composers looked to the burgeoning musical styles of chalutzim (pioneers) in Palestine—which blended Eastern European melodies with Yemenite and Arabic rhythmic influences—to build a modern, national Jewish musical identity

Schalit self-published the sheet music for this work (Selbstverlag) while serving as a music director in Providence, alongside a companion piece titled The Pilgrims: A Cantata Based on Palestinian and Hebrew Folk Songs
