Antique Aesthetic Movement Wisteria Tile Panel — Trent & U.S. Encaustic, c.1885

This assembled Aesthetic Movement tile panel centers on nine wisteria tiles by the Trent Tile Company. The wisteria comes in high relief — trailing flower clusters, buds, and leafing branches moving across the tiles in the naturalistic, asymmetrical way the Aesthetic Movement prized. Wisteria, the most sought-after botanical motif of the period, almost never surfaces.

Around the wisteria sit four rosette medallion tiles and seven slim border tiles by the United States Encaustic Tile Company — two great American tile houses of the era, together in one matched glaze. The color runs a deep, smoky slate that pools darker in the relief and catches light on the raised work. It reads moody and atmospheric, more gray-green than blue depending on the light, carrying the kind of depth that comes only from a glaze of this age. The framework as assembled measures 33 x 18 inches.

The whole panel speaks the language of the Aesthetic Movement — the idea that a beautiful object needs no justification beyond its own beauty. Botanical motifs drawn from nature, quiet asymmetry, an emphasis on surface and glaze. That sensibility in its most collectible form.

These tiles came out of a Chicago estate, pulled from what was almost certainly an original fireplace installation — the slim border tiles likely ran along the hearth. Collected and removed by hand, they carry their age honestly: even crazing throughout, some surface flecking and minor losses to the high points of the relief, light staining in places. Expected and correct for tile of this period, and shown clearly in the photos. The patina of more than a century.
