The History of Nitto Dinnerware Company
Nitto dinnerware, often found with
mid-century modern designs, was a brand produced in Nagoya, Japan, heavily
connected to the legacy of the Morimura family and Noritake. Originating from
the 1916 establishment of Gomei Kaisha Nitto Shokai, it thrived post-WWII as a
porcelain exporter throughout the 1980s, often produced by related
manufacturers. The brand is linked to the Morimura Brothers network, which
established Gomei Kaisha Nitto Shokai in Nagoya in 1916 for domestic tableware
sales. Following World War II, many Japanese ceramic producers were absorbed or
affiliated with Noritake. Nitto branded china emerged from this network,
specializing in ceramic, porcelain, and stoneware exported heavily to Western
markets, particularly during the 1960s–1980s. Pieces were known for durable,
frequently floral, or modern patterns. Production was not exclusive to one
factory, with some items produced in Mexico and Thailand later in its history. Some
of the most popular patterns were produced in the 1980s, including
"Radiance" (marketed under the brand Vina Fera), which was made of
durable, oven-safe stoneware, and others simply marked "Nitto Japan".
