American lawyer (1841-1882) who, frustrated in his attempt to secure an ambassadorship, assassinated President James Garfield in 1881.
Scarce overall 4.25 x 6.5 (image approximately 3.5×4.5) unsigned cabinet photo of President Garfield's assassin, taken by Charles M. Bell of Washington, while in jail.
In very good to fine condition, with faint marginal toning, minor handling wear.
Back of the photo states: “The negative from which this photograph is taken was made personally by me in the jail in the city of Washington on July 4th, 1881, and I warn all persons not to infringe upon the copyright. C.M. Bell”.
Guiteau was executed on June 30, 1882, in the District of Columbia, just two days before the first anniversary of the shooting.
