THIS SPOON HAS A BIRTHDAY. CHRISTMAS DAY, 1901.
Engraved on the back of the handle, in the precise hand of a Victorian-era jeweler, is an inscription that transforms this piece from a souvenir into a document: "to O.K. 12.25.'01" a Christmas gift, given on December 25th, 1901, to someone whose initials were O.K. The spoon is 124 years old. We know exactly when it changed hands.
THE BUILDING FARGO MASONIC TEMPLE, 501 FIRST AVENUE NORTH
The bowl carries a deeply engraved architectural portrait of the Fargo Masonic Temple one of North Dakota's most imposing civic buildings of its era, featuring a distinctive corner tower, arched entryways, and multiple stories of finely rendered windows. Planning for the building began in 1894. The cornerstone was laid June 7, 1899. The building was first occupied June 6, 1900.
This spoon was gifted eighteen months after the building opened its doors.
In 1968, after 68 years of service to the Masonic lodges of the Red River Valley, the building was demolished. The site became a parking lot.
This spoon is older than the building's entire lifespan. It was made when the building was brand new, a point of civic pride in a young frontier city still finding its footing. It survived everything the 20th century brought and it's here, in your hands, telling that story.
THE INSCRIPTIONS
This spoon carries two personal engravings that add provenance rather than subtract from it. On the front of the handle, a name has been engraved in flowing Victorian cursive script — the recipient's given name, rendered in the elegant hand of a period jeweler. On the back, the gift dedication: to O.K. December 25, 1901.
These aren't defects. They're biography. Someone chose this spoon, walked into a jeweler's shop in Fargo or nearby, and had it personalized as a Christmas gift in the first year of the 20th century. That story is now part of the object.

Stamped STERLING confirming .925 pure silver content. Handle features a continuous double beaded border the full length of the piece, terminating in an ornate three-dimensional rose and floral cluster consistent with premium American silversmithing of the 1890–1910 period
