Folding Wings and Glide Capability
The GBU-39/B features a distinctive diamondback folding wing assembly that deploys after release. The wings are attached above the warhead section and, when deployed, form a V‑shape that significantly increases lift and allows the bomb to glide. This extended range enables standoff attacks from distances exceeding 60 nautical miles (approximately 110 km) when released from high altitude. Carriage and Deployment
One of the key advantages of the SDB is its small size, which allows aircraft to carry many more munitions than traditional bombs. Using the BRU‑61/A carriage system, a single hardpoint can carry four GBU-39/B bombs in place of one 2,000‑lb bomb. The bomb is integrated on a wide range of platforms, including the F‑15E, F‑16, F‑22, F‑35, B‑1, B‑2, B‑52, and more recently the MQ‑9 Reaper drone. Over 17,000 have been employed by the U.S. and partner nations.

GLSDB (Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb): Combines the GBU-39/B with a rocket motor from the M26 artillery rocket, enabling ground launch from systems like HIMARS with a range of 150–160 km.
ERAM (Extended Range Attack Munition): Adds a small jet engine and external fuel tank to the SDB for significantly extended range.
SDB II (GBU-53/B): A more advanced variant featuring a tri‑mode seeker (millimeter wave radar, infrared, and semi‑active laser) for engaging moving targets.
