TM9 1408A ~ Engine & Clutch ~ 1/4 Ton Utility Vehicle ~ M38 ~ Ordnance Maintenance

 This is a quality reprint of US Army Manual TM9 1408A, M38 engine manual.  Originally published in June of 1951.  It is an early document for the M38.  The M38 is my favorite jeep and always will be.  If it is one of yours and you are lucky enough to possess one, here is an excellent resource for it.

From the Manual:

1. Scope

 a. This manual is published for the information and guidance of personnel responsible for depot maintenance of this materiel. It contains information on maintenance which is beyond the scope of the tools, equipment, or supplies normally available to using organizations. This manual does not contain information which is intended primarily for the using organization, since such information is available to ordnance maintenance personnel in the pertinent operator's technical manuals or field manuals.

 b. This manual contains ~ description of and procedures for removal, disassembly, inspection, repair, rebuild, and assembly of the engine and clutch for the 1/4-ton 4x4 utility truck M38. The appendix contains a list of current references, including supply catalogs, technical manuals, and other available publications applicable to the materiel.

 c. TM 9-804 contains operating and lubricating instructions for the materiel and contains all maintenance operations allocated to using organizations in performing maintenance work within their scope.

 d. TM 9-1804B contains service information on the power train, body and frame.

 e. TM 9-1826A or TM 9-1825B contains service information on the Delco-Remy or Auto-Lite electrical equipment.

 f. TM 9-1826A contains service information on the Carter carburetor.

 g. TM 9-1828A contains service information on the AD fuel pump.

  The pictures are very usable and not washed out or too dark like many of the manuals I have seen that have come from copy machines.  These are laser printed on 24 pound paper.  Copy paper is generally 20 pound and you can feel the difference.  It is bound with GBC plastic combs so that it will lay flat.  If you would like I can, rather than bind with the plastic comb, three hole punch it for your binder.

             If you are collecting military manuals or looking for a prop to display at your next show, this is not the manual you want.  If you want some usable information on your Jeep that will lay flat on your bench when you are working on your pride and joy or some period information on how it was done back Sixty Five years ago while you curl up in front of the fire this winter, this is the one you need.
