Description

Original vernacular graphite portrait drawing depicting a young man identified as “Tony,” dated January 14, 1922. The portrait is carefully rendered in soft pencil with strong attention to facial structure, hair, eyes, and tonal shading, producing a psychologically direct and emotionally immediate image characteristic of early twentieth-century album and keepsake culture.

The composition combines academic portrait conventions with highly personal vernacular execution. The direct gaze, sculpted hair treatment, and dark background create an unusually atmospheric presentation, while the handwritten name and precise 1922 date reinforce its intimate handmade character.

Executed on light cream paper or card stock with rounded lower corners. Reverse is blank except for a small penciled “22.”

Condition
