For sale is a pair of medals consisting of British War Medal & Mercantile Marine Medal, both named W.G.R. SNELLGROVE. AUSTRALIA 278. They come with copies of ship’s crew lists, MIC, newspaper articles with photograph.

Superintendent Engineer William George Rayner Snellgrove was born in Gawler, South Australia in 1879.

He commenced work for the Western Australian Government Railways as an apprentice fitter in 1893, qualifying in his trade in 1899, leaving the railway service the same year.

It would appear that he became a merchant sailor about this time. He appears on the ships list arriving in Singapore in 1915 on the SS Montoro, which was owned by Burns, Philip & Co, Limited (a major Australian shipping line and merchant that operated in the South Pacific). He was the ships Chief Engineer.

He remained in the company’s employment post WW1, rising to the position of superintendent engineer for the company. He appears in various newspaper articles supervising construction of company ships in this capacity.

He died in 1958 in New South Wales
