1863 $10 Confederate States of America T-59 CSA PMG AU58

1863 $10 Confederate States of America T-59 CSA PMG AU58
A highly appealing near-Uncirculated example of the popular 1863 Confederate States of America $10 note, this T-59 is certified PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 and offers the strong visual presence and paper quality that advanced collectors seek in high-grade CSA type material.
The face is dominated by an engraved view of the Tennessee State Capitol at center, an architectural vignette that gives the issue much of its distinctive character. At right is the oval portrait of Robert M. T. Hunter, Confederate Secretary of State and later Secretary of the Treasury, paired with a bold “10” protector. The design is framed by ornate lathework, intricate side panels, and finely executed denomination elements, while the red vertical “NOVEMBER 1863” overprint adds an especially attractive splash of color to the otherwise black-on-cream composition. The back displays the classic Confederate reverse with repeated “X” motifs in ornate medallions and curved TEN DOLLARS legends, printed in a soft blue that remains pleasing and well defined.
PMG has assigned this note a Choice About Uncirculated 58 grade, placing it just shy of full Uncirculated status. The note presents with crisp detail, strong ink, and commendable eye appeal for the grade. Margins are generally attractive, the paper retains excellent body, and the overall appearance suggests a lightly handled example with considerable originality. Both face and back remain clean and visually balanced, supporting its premium certified presentation.
Issued at Richmond on April 6, 1863, the T-59 was part of the heavily used Confederate currency system that financed the Southern war effort during the Civil War. These notes circulated widely under increasingly difficult economic conditions, making sharply preserved survivors especially desirable today. The type is well known to collectors both for its elegant engraving and for its historical immediacy, representing one of the most collected and recognizable denominations of the Confederate series.
The T-59 is a staple of Confederate paper money collecting, yet examples certified in the upper About Uncirculated range are consistently sought after, particularly when they combine originality, sharp printing, and strong overall eye appeal. As a certified PMG 58, this piece occupies an attractive collecting tier: superior to the average circulated survivor and appreciably more accessible than strictly Uncirculated examples, while still offering a notably refined appearance.
An attractive and historically important Confederate $10, this 1863 T-59 PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 is a desirable acquisition for the collector of Civil War currency, Southern financial history, or high-grade CSA type notes.
