Description
A Chinese kraak porcelain plate from the late Ming Chongzhen period (1628–1644), decorated in underglaze cobalt blue.

The central medallion depicts two seated scholars in a landscape, rendered in a free and expressive style characteristic of late Ming transitional wares. The cavetto is divided into four cartouches: two decorated with figural scenes and two with floral motifs, creating a balanced and visually engaging composition.

The reverse is typically decorated for the period, with two simple floral motifs along the rim, while the base remains unmarked. The overall style reflects the transition from late Ming to early Qing porcelain production.

A closely comparable example is illustrated in Maura Rinaldi, Kraak Porcelain – A Moment in the History of Trade, p. 115, supporting a dating to circa 1635–1650.
