Umayyad bronze fals struck at Hims during the final years of the Umayyad Caliphate. The obverse features a jerboa facing left, with the outer marginal legend reading “in the name of Allah this fals was struck in Hims.” The reverse bears the inscription “bi-amr Marwan bin Bashir” in three lines, naming the governor responsible for the issue.
Jerboa types are among the most distinctive and collectible animal motifs in late Umayyad bronze coinage. Issues citing provincial governors, such as Marwan ibn Bashir, are historically significant as they reflect local administrative authority during the turbulent closing phase of Umayyad rule.
Authenticity Check:
Natural patina consistent with 8th-century bronze. Proper lightweight fabric and clear Kufic epigraphy typical of late Umayyad provincial issues. No signs of casting or modern tooling.
