Mint: ar-Râfiqa (Raqqa, Northern Syria)
Date: 189 AH
Denomination: Fals (copper)
Weight: 5.84 g
Reference: Ilisch Nordmesopotamien 5; Lowick/Savage 339
Condition: Very Fine
Obverse:
Caliphal name only, struck during the governorship of ʿIsâ ibn Abân.
Reverse:
Standard Abbasid epigraphic formula for ar-Râfiqa mint issues, dated 189 AH.
Description:
Substantial Abbasid bronze fals struck at ar-Râfiqa, the government quarter of Raqqa, which served as a major caliphal residence under Hârûn al-Rashîd. During this period, Raqqa/ar-Râfiqa was effectively a political center of the Abbasid Empire.
Dated 189 AH, this issue names only the caliph while struck under the administration of ʿIsâ ibn Abân. Copper issues from ar-Râfiqa are scarcer than those of Baghdad and other major mints, and pieces approaching 6 grams are particularly desirable for their strong fabric and presence.
An excellent example with attractive patina and solid strike.
Authenticity:
Correct Abbasid bronze fabric, Kufic calligraphy, and mint/date format consistent with Ilisch 5 and Lowick/Savage 339. No signs of modern tooling or casting. Fully guaranteed authentic.
Condition:
Very Fine with clear inscriptions and beautiful patina. Strong flan and good centering for the type.
