This is a traditional Japanese decorative kabuto made for a Gogatsu Ningyo, or Japanese May Doll display.
The design is inspired by helmets worn by actual samurai commanders. It features impressive deer-antler side crests and a large crescent-shaped front crest.
In Japan, May Doll decorations are traditionally displayed to pray for a child’s healthy growth, prosperity, protection, success, and happiness.
Although traditionally associated with the Boys’ Day season, this impressive kabuto can be displayed throughout the year as Japanese interior decoration, cultural art, or a samurai collectible.
The samurai warrior most famously associated with a deer-antler helmet is Honda Tadakatsu.
Honda Tadakatsu was a powerful Sengoku-period general who served Tokugawa Ieyasu. He is remembered as one of the greatest warriors of his time.
He was famous for his enormous Kazuno Wakidate Kabuto, a helmet decorated with large deer-antler side crests. He was also known for carrying the legendary spear called Tonbokiri.
Deer antlers created a powerful and imposing appearance and came to symbolize strength, courage, dignity, and the spirit of the samurai.
Sanada Yukimura, also known as Sanada Nobushige, is sometimes depicted in modern reproductions, armor displays, dramas, and decorative works wearing a helmet with deer-antler crests.
