Vintage silverplate and enamel Antiko souvenir spoon depicting Het Steen, the historical medieval fortress in Antwerp, Belgium. This is a rare Antwerp Belgium souvenir spoon measuring 4" long.

A lovely travel memento or collector gift for someone who holds a place in their heart for this historic Belgian landmark. 

Heinz Kohlbecker established his business -- Kohlbecker Silberwarenfabrik -- at Pforzheim (in the southwest of Germany) in 1946. Antiko is the brand name that Kohlbecker Silberwarenfabrik has used since 1959. It is formed from the words 'ANTIque' and 'KOhlbecker'. 

A bit of background about the subject matter of the spoon...

Built between 1200 and 1225 as a gateway to a larger castle of the Dukes of Brabant, Het Steen was the first stone fortress of Antwerp. It is Antwerp's oldest building and used to be its oldest urban centre. The words "Het Steen" are Dutch for The Rock. Previously known as Antwerpen Burcht, Het Steen gained its current name around 1520, after significant rebuilding under Charles V. The Dutch word "steen" means "stone" or "rock", and used to be the word used to express "fortress" or "palace".

The spoon bowl is decorated with a beautiful enamel depiction of the Het Steen fortress, and the finial at the top of the handle is an enamel coat of arms for Antwerp. Rear of finial is stamped 'ANTIKO 100'. The 100 refers to 100 grams of silver being used in the plating process.

In vintage condition. A corner of the coat of arms enamel finial has a bit of wear to it. The beautiful work on the bowl of the spoon is perfectly intact and lovely.
