The
Gibeon meteorite is a rare and highly sought-after iron-nickel meteorite that fell in prehistoric times in Namibia, Africa.
It is prized by collectors and jewelers for its unique crystalline
structure, exceptional stability, and historical significance. Key Characteristics
- Composition: It is a Group IVA fine octahedrite, composed of approximately 91.8% iron and 7.7% nickel, with trace amounts of cobalt, phosphorus, and iridium.
- Widmanstätten Pattern:
When etched with acid, it reveals a striking, natural crystalline
lattice formed over millions of years of slow cooling in space. This
pattern is exclusive to celestial bodies and cannot be replicated on
Earth.
- Aesthetic & Stability:
Known as the "King of the Irons," it is remarkably resistant to rust
and often features a natural "desert patina" or sculptural "thumbprint"
markings called regmaglypts.
Why is it Rare?
- Export Ban:
Since 2004, the Namibian government has enforced a strict ban on the
collection and export of meteorites under the National Heritage Act.
Most pieces available today come from older collections exported before
this law.
- Limited Supply:
While it was once more common, it has become increasingly difficult to
find as existing specimens move into private collections and museums.
Market Availability

- Slices & Fragments: Smaller etched slices or raw bits are popular for research and smaller budgets. These can range from $40 to $1,500 based on weight and pattern quality.
- Jewelry & Finished Goods: Because of its workability, it is frequently used in wedding bands, pendants, and watch faces. Retailers like Thorum and various eBay sellers offer these items
