Religious Scene Death of Jesus Christ on the Cross 19th Century Oil on Sheet Metal
School of the 19th Century. The specific artist remains unidentified. The composition is executed after an original artwork housed in the Kirche am Hof in Vienna, Austria.
Oil on sheet metal. The painting does not bear any visible artist signature or date on the front. A painted plaque at the top of the cross features the Latin inscription IESUS NAZARENUS REX JUDEORUM.
The vertical composition centers on the crucified Christ, surrounded by mourning figures including the Virgin Mary to the left and a Roman soldier in a bright red cloak with a horse to the right. The background features a darkened, muted landscape and architectural elements. The artwork is in fair condition with significant, widespread paint loss, flaking, and surface abrasions, particularly concentrated along the vertical edges, the lower left corner, and the bottom third of the metal panel.
