Overview:
Exceptional Umayyad bronze fals struck at Dimashq in 102 AH (720/721 AD). The obverse bears the Kalima in three lines — la ilaha illa Allah wahdahu — enclosed within a double circle and surrounded by five interlaced annulets, a distinctive decorative feature of this Damascus issue.
The reverse reads bi-dimashq sanat thanatayn wa mi'a (“In Damascus, year two and one hundred”) within a wreath-like corona of two branches. Coins of this type belong to the fully reformed epigraphic series of the Umayyad Caliphate, representing the mature Islamic monetary system established after the reforms of `Abd al-Malik.
Dimashq was the Umayyad capital and one of the most important mints of the early Islamic world. Well-struck examples with complete legends and strong surfaces are highly desirable.
Authenticity Check:
Deep black patina with areas of terra rosso earthen deposits consistent with Levantine find conditions. Sharp strike, natural metal surfaces, and correct early Islamic flan characteristics. No modern alterations observed.
Comparable Examples:
Published in Walker 839; Bone 76; and Goussous 398. Comparable specimens appear in major Islamic coin collections and auction archives.
